At Comfort Solutions ®, along with our long time loyal partners at Bed King ®, we decided to conduct a social experiment that involved a few beds, a few (live) bodies, and a boardroom. We started with Andy a tall, strapping guy in our team, with broad shoulders and lower back issues. We placed Andy on a firm mattress – because this is what the industry recommends. Andy didn’t like it.
We called Pinkie, a petite 28-year-old in Administration with no sleeping complaints, and asked her to choose the bed that felt the most comfortable for her. She chose a ‘Plush bed’. The most obvious choice. After a few tries in the boardroom, Pinkie complained she wasn’t enjoying the mattress.
Carla was another sleeper volunteer in the boardroom. She was shorter, and somewhat of an easy sleeper, with a minor complaint about her bed being too soft. We gave her a ‘gentle firm’ industry recommendation. The result – a disaster. Before long, Carla said she wanted to return to her ‘soft’ bed, as this type of mattress was not comfy at all.
The results made us crazy.
Were we crazy? WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS RIGHT FOR THE CUSTOMER, WAS WRONG. We made a bold move: we decided to toss the industry standard to the curb, and we started again. And guess what! It worked.
